Overview

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position seeks a highly-skilled PhD-level scientist with expertise in Mass Spectrometry (MS) to conduct interdisciplinary metabolic research. The position includes:

  1. Core Lab Operations: Performing and overseeing sample analysis within the Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory. This includes technical troubleshooting, data management, and data analysis.
  2. Research Design & Method Development:  Developing and implementing new laboratory methods and participating in the preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts.
  3. Mentorship: Overseeing research projects for students in TUC’s Master’s and medical school programs.

Responsibilities

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the processing and preparation of diverse biological and chemical samples for mass spectrometry analysis.
  • Perform and optimize Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) methods.
  • Provide direct technical and operational supervision for the wet laboratory (sample preparation), ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Analyze and interpret complex mass spectrometry data and prepare results for publication and presentation.
  • Train and mentor student researchers (MS and DO students) on proper research methodologies, experimental design, and lab techniques.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (if applicable):

  • Directly supervise the day-to-day work and performance of laboratory assistants and technicians.
  • Oversee the scheduling, training, and quality assurance of wet laboratory activities.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field is required.
  • Extensive hands-on experience operating and maintaining Mass Spectrometry instrumentation, particularly GC/MS.

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
  • Advanced knowledge of biochemistry and organic chemistry principles relevant to sample preparation (e.g., TLC, derivatization).
  • Ability to work independently with general guidance and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with general laboratory and data analysis software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
